Scared I was,

That day my bicycle lost it’s supports;

Afraid, excited, free.

I remember that I threw as you let go of the bike,

And the one after that,

When I caught you smiling!

Scared, for sure I was; but then, it changed!

Scared I was,

That day in third grade;

After all, failure was new to me.

I remember scrambling through the faces,

Through the disappointment,

Only to get sucked in the vortex some more;

Till you put your hand on me.

I remember that smile, that ‘all right, champ!’

Scared, for sure I was; but then, it changed!

Scared I was,

That day she left,

Scared, angry, sad, crying!

And I remember you,

Still, strong, steady in the storm,

Waiting, as the savages marched on!

Scared, for sure I was; but then, it changed!

Scared I was,

That day in the infirmary,

 I was going to be fine, I knew;

It was you, for whom I was worried!

Scared, for sure I’ve been often;

But then, things have changed, I have changed!
