The contexts in which I use my phone

Thinking about phone usage + productivity

I started thinking about the different contexts in which I use my phone, while rearranging the apps I use across different home screens. This style of home-screen/automation was highlighted in Installer #73. This is the thread. The idea is to have four screens quickly accessible by using 4 shortcuts added to the default dock.

I was previously using just one home screen for everything, which was simpler but that meant I could not have all the apps I needed on the home screen. So I had to make some choices. I had to remove some apps from the home screen, which I use fairly consistently. And the home screen was full of apps, which irritated me, slightly.

Back to the task at hand then. I need now to think and arrange the four screens I need. Or, what are the contexts in which I use my phone.

Context is different than place. I use music and notes during both my walk or while sitting in the library. Context is more important.

  1. Work - Outlook + Teams + LinkedIN + Enterprise Apps (Timesheet, etc.)
  2. Comms/social - Email Apps (Gmail/Mail) + Social Apps (Mastodon/Threads/Reddit/IG/YouTube)
  3. Writing - Obsidian + Notes + Music
  4. Reading - Kindle + NetNewsWire + Safari
  5. Home - Smart-home apps (Deltaco/Roborock) + Utility apps (OmaFortum)
  6. Financial - Bank apps (Nordea/Nordea ID) + Investment apps (HDFC)
  7. Travel - Transport (HSL) + Maps + Stay (AirBnb+Booking)

There are other apps and contexts, but they are either not things that I do very often, or are very niche things.
